Back pain is a common problem for many people, both young and old. Some have chronic issues, while others experience acute back pain, which normally lasts less than 3 months. For those with chronic pain, medications like
epidural steroid injections and facet joint injections are administered for pain relief, while also giving patients the ability to participate in physical therapy exercises.
Facet Joint Injections for Back Pain
Like epidural steroid injections, facet joint injections are given to patients for relief from pain. Many people who have spinal arthritis (characterized by “hunching over”) or back injuries are given facet joint injections. Pain management is key, since the injections are injected directly into facet joints in the spine. If pain does not see any improvement when it’s injected into the facet joints, then it’s likely that the pain is coming from another source. For those who do see improvement, physical therapy and exercise is recommended a week after the procedure in order to see results while the numbing agent continues to provide pain relief.
Epidural Steroid Injections for Back Pain
For those that suffer from severe back pain, epidural steroid injections are a smart treatment option. Causes of pain vary, and until the pain is addressed, patients will not be able to find relief or live a normal life. Epidural steroid injections are used when pain needs to be treated locally. Often, other medications like oral steroids or painkillers cannot get close enough to the place where the pain is occurring, leaving most patients left to simply deal with the pain.Epidural steroid injections are different, because they get as close to the source of pain as possible. Many people who suffer from back pain are actually suffering from inflammation, which can lead to pain. Epidural steroid injections flush out the area which is experiencing the pain, which can bring pain relief. They are injected directly into the epidural space in the spine and provide instant pain relief through a combination of cortisone (a steroid) and lidocaine, which work together to decrease inflammation, as well as alleviate pain. After receiving epidural steroid injections, patients will typically have relief from their pain for a week, all the way up to a year. Depending on the level of pain relief, patients will be given up to three epidural steroid injections per year.Whether mild or severe, no one should have to suffer from back pain.
